HARDY RACEHORSES

ROY BUN'S GOOD AVERAGE

With the conclusion of the Wellington Meeting this week there will be only a few further opportunities fot the gallopers to improve upon their records for the season. The closing term has been a very busy one for many horses. Thirty-three have already faced the starter 25 times or more, and the most frequent performer has been Lustral, with 37 appearances and another due to have been added today. Day Wind and The Surgeon have contested 33 races, and a great many have , started over 20 times. An analysis of the/performances of the most frequently raced division shows that the majority, without reaching the heights, have paid their way, and few can have shown a substantial loss to their owners, apart from betting. The 33 stalwarts have won among themselves 131 races, an average of four, and they have compiled 136 seconds and 110 thirds, an average of over seven. Such a record appears to prove that horses can be raced more frequently under present-day racing I and transport conditions than was possible in the past without detriment to i the animal. ' Generally, thoroughbreds in England and on the Continent are mucn more lightly raced than they are in the Antipodes, but in New Zealand and the Commonwealth horses generally are able to stand up well to racing and travelling.. Two of the horses on the list have won eight times. These are Race Call, now trained at Hawera, and the Grey-mouth-owned Roy Bun. In addition, Race Call secured six minor placings and' Roy Bun 11. Roy Bun was only six times unplaced in 25 starts, and to him goes the palm for consistency. In 27 starts Lady Montana has won seven times and has been 10 times placed. Slippery won seven of his 32 races and earned six minor placings, and Buster Brown won seven races and was nine times placed in 29 outings. Six races have been won by Aiunga in 26 starts; Clessamor has also won six out of 26. Tosh, who started 28 times, and Waitaka* with 30 starts, have likewise saluted the judge half a dozen times. Siegmund started on 27 occasions for six successes, four of which were gained in succession. The full list of horses who have contested 25 or more races to date this term, with the number of wins secured, is as under:—Airam, 33, one win;, Aiunga, 26,. six wins; Buster Brown, 29, seven; Clessamor, 26, six; Crooning, 28, three; Davolo (dead), 27, two; Day Wind, 33, two; Drinkup, 27, three; Eastern Heir, 27, *one; Galteemore, 29, ,three; Gay Rose, .25, three; Jonathan, 26, four; Kena, 27, four^Lady Montana, 27, seven; LeToquet, 25, two; Lustral, 37, four; Mai de Mer, 26, one; Melvanui, 26, one; Queen Dorothy, 25, five; Race Call, 27, eight; Raceline, 27, two; Ringshot, 25, one; Roy Bun, 25, eight; Sergia, 26, five; Siegmund, 27, six; Slippery, 32, seven; Son and Heir, 31, three; Superex, 26, three; Thala, 29, two; The Surgeon, 33, four; Tosh, 2b, six; Valamito, 28, five, Waitaka, 30, six. • .
