The Department of Agriculture is at present engaged in investigating the control of yarr, and experiments are being laid down in the South Island to discover a suitable treatment. The question of the spread of yarr and fathen has been taken up with the Department by the New Zealand Farmers' Union, which has expressed alarm at the spread of these two weeds. In the case of fat-hen the Department advises working up the ground into a fine tilth a few weeks before the crop is to be sown so that most of the weed seeds will germinate near the surface. They may then be removed by a subsectuent cultivation before the crop is sown.
The City Council last night granted the Smith Family permission to hold a Sunday concert on July 10, provided that the prices are 2s and Is.
