OFFICIAL'S VISIT
After an absence of fourteen years from the Dominion, Mr. Koy Olen, a former New Zealarider, and at present deputy superintendent of the NewSouth Wales Ambulance Service,, arrived today by the Wanganella from Sydney on a visit to New Zealand.
One of the outstanding ambulance officers in the Commonwealth, Mr. Olen is also officer-in-cnarge of the entire Newtown-Marrickville district", and has a fleet of modern ambulance cars at his disposal.. • ■ .
After many years of study, Mr. Olen has more ambulance, first-aid, and lifesaving certificates thari any oth*>r person in- Australia, possessing awards for fourteen different subjects, including the University Certificate for Anatomy and Physiology. ' ' . ■■■
Commencing as a junior officer, Mr. Olen displayed such outstanding ability as an organiser and leader that he was specially-trained by the Metropolitan Chief Officer (Mr. H. J. Mitchell). He earned State-wide fame as a metropolitan and country lecturer on carbon dioxide gas, war gas, and air raids precautions. Carbon- dioxide has since then been extensively used in Australia to save the lives of persons apparently dead from drowning, gas poisoning, and electric shock.
Though his trip mainly is being taken to visit his mother, who lives in the Bay of Plenty district, Mr. OJen will combine business with pleasure. The New Zealand ambui^ncesi are conducted on a system entirely different from that in New South Wales, and Mr. Olen wishes %o compare the methods. He will visit IChristchurch, Dunedin, and Auckland.
