A GOOD INNINGS

The former English trainer, J. Birch, who now presides over the establishment of M. Volterra in France, had a very successful innings last April. At Longchamp he scored with Bois Eoussel in the Prix Juigne, and added the Prix de Fontainebleau, with Corde Chasse the same afternoon. The following day he won the Prix Gazon at St. Cloud with Asthael. It was his ill-fortune that M. Volterra should have disposed of Bois Roussel prior to his English Derby success. Birch had experience with John Porter and Richard Marsh in England, and was head man to the late Frank Carter when the latter had Mon Talisman, Brulette, Pearl Cap, and Clairvoyante in his charge. The indications are that M. Volterra's new trainer will register many more successes on the Turf in his adopted country.
