WET WEATHER

IMPROVEMENT TOMORROW

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Light to moderate but freshening northerly to north-westerly winds. Weather dull and misty with steady rain, but improving tomorrow. Temperatures cool to moderate.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, dssued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for light to moderate northeasterly to northerly winds, at first over eastern areas from Marlborough to the Bay of Plenty. Over the South Island winds will be variable in direction. Otherwise north-westerlies to westerlies will prevail, and in places later south-westerlies, and winds will become strong at times, about and to the north of Cook Strait. The weather will be unsettled with fairly general rain. Some heavy falls are probable in the central provinces and on the west coast of the South Island, with snow on the South Island ranges. Temperatures will be moderate. Yesterday morning conditions were rather indefinite over the Tasman Sea, with pressure on the low side. During the afternoon, however, there were indications of the development of a low-pressure centre over the central portion, and it was owing to this that the brief southerly of yesterday was only as pronounced as it proved to be. During last night the depression deepened considerably, and this morning it was centred west of Nelson. As it approached winds turned again to the north-east or north and freshened considerably. The centre of the disturbance should cross the northern part of the South Island today and winds revert once again to a westerly or southwesterly direction. The weather in most places has again become overcast, with rain in western and northern districts. Some heavy falls have been reported, these including 87 points at Cape Maria Van Diemen, 192 points at Cape Egmont and 84 points at Farewell Spit. Temperatures have been rather mild.

Auckland's weather yesterday was mainly fair, although several brief showers fell. Early this morning there was steady rain, 28 points being recorded up to 9 a.m. today. Moderate westerly to south-westerly breezes have prevailed and temperatures have been mild, the maximum yesterday being 66.1 degrees and the minimum 48.7 degrees.

The weather in Wellington yesterday gradually improved and the afternoon was fine and mild, 4.4 hours of bright sunshine being recorded. There was a light breeze from the south, but during the night a northerly breeze set in. The weather this morning was overcast with some occasional light rain and at 10 a.m. it was very misty. The maximum temperature yesterday was 53 degrees and the minimum 45.2 degrees. In Christchurch yesterday morning it was overcast with an occasional light drizzle, but it cleared during the afternoon, when a fresh southerly was blowing. Winds this morning were light and variable, and it was again dull with light rain falling, 13 points having been recorded up to 9 a.m. Temperatures have been cool, yesterday's maximum and minimum being 47.4 and 42.1 degrees respectively.

Although it was cloudy in parts of the city area, Dunedin had mainly fair weather yesterday, with a light southwesterly breeze and cool temperatures. This morning it was overcast and threatening, with a light northerly breez*.
