SPORTING

FIRST OF VISITORS

TRENTHAM TRIALS

BRYCE STREET IMPRESSES

(By "Rangatira.") The first of the visiting trainers to put in an appearance at Trentham is M. J. Carroll, who arrived yesterday from Te Rapa with Bryce Street, Kilberis,'

and Hunting Blood. These were the

only fresh horses on the .track this morning, when conditions were bleak

and damp for the training. The trial grass is now very heavy and there is no drying whatever in the air.,

VerJ- little jumping was done. J. W. Lowe dees not intend to iet Red Sun

facie the sbd wall again till race day, when it is hoped that he will' not mind it, as this fence is the second-last on the first round in the Wellington Steeplechase and the horses are by that time usually well warmed to their job. ; . "•

Jewish-Lad (B. Sullivan) gave a capital exhibition alone over ' four fences. He went at an even pace and' showed himself a very clever jumper for one with so little experience.

Beau Gallante (P. Burgess) ran'down the two fences Tie jumped, but he has always been a poor schooler arid; is rarely jumped except on race' day.

Laggard (J. McCauley) went over four fences yesterday and two'more

this morning, jumping low and'sirtartly for a horse of his stamp. Lustral (Burgess) again gave a satisfactory display over four fences, and he goes to Marton on Saturday, when Burgess Will ride him.

Bryce Street (N. 'C. Trillo) did solid pacing' over a couple of rounds. He is a short, well-covered, thick-set gelding who is the right type for steeplechasing, • and he, worked ■■ pleasingly. Kilberis' (Trillo), exercised ;in the centre, is. a much' leaner Customer and he did not impress as Kis stablemate did. -Hunting Blood, who looks well, was given pace work only.Sunee' (S. Q.'Robinson) drew away from- Red Sun tL. : 'T. Nesbitt)'at the end of a mile' in' Imin 51' 2-ssec,- .the last half-mile in 55 3-ssec. These horses will be ridden by G. Ridgway and C. Thomson respectively on Tuesday.

Sunder-was given an 1 exercise canter over seven furlongs. Monteloo revealed a complete lack of pace when going a mile with .Laggard after the latter had done his school.

Sigurd (G. finished on well over a length ahead of Debham (Sulliv&n), with Phil (A. G. 3*. Newnham) tailed off, after five furlongs in Imin 8 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 54sec. Debham had much the worst of the 'wefghtsi * " . Essex (Nesbitt) ran half a mile alone in 53 4-ssec. Though he has not raced for. eighteen months, he has recently done a good deal-of solid" work and he is by no means backward.

Arctic King . (Wilson); was- not extended over half a mile in 58sec. Raroa (Newnham) took 55 3-ssec. Alunga (A. W. Sim) did an easy five furlongs in Imin Usee* Sunbeam (Burgess).-caught Fairy Dale (A. E. Bennet) just short of the post at the end of half a mile in 53. sec, which was a good.gallop on the heavy going." ,

Rockingham: (T. Young), and -Liane (.Wilson); did; an easy six furlongs in Imin 29sec. Coronado beat Quexbh'a by a couple of length?, over half a mile in 54 3-ssec. Moth'er-in-Law (McCauley) was three "lengths' ahead of Gajr Hunting (VV Bevah7»after running the last half-mile of. five furlongs in 55sec. Matoru' (Ddyie) !,i slipped over five furlongs in Imin v ßsec, the last half-mile in 53 3-ssec, and he seemed to be doing his work well.

An additional mount ior S. Wilson at Marton will bp Tidewaiter. Further Trentham are:—J. McCauley on Laggard arid Motlier-in-Law, G. R. Tattei'sall on Kinloch, Q. G. Goulsbro' on Essex, N. C. Trillo on Bryce Street and KiJberis,,P. Burgess on Lustral, and R.' Glading on Paul Robeson and Lord l Quick. '■ : - .'.... ", v | VALARTH SCHOOLS WELL I (By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.") DUNEDIN, This Day. Horses for Oamaru and Trentham provided interest at Wingatui this morning, the outside of 'the course proper being v6ry heavy. ■ Valantua, Alma, Pink Robe, and Delrain started, off at the mile. Delrain led for the first half of the journey, but they then bunched. Once well in :the straight, however, Valantua and Alma cameright away. They ran the .last seven: furlongs in Imin 42seci and i Valantua-was keeping Alma busy. Monipere, "who was not I ridden out, finished alongside; Pink Robe,; Delrain being well 'beaten.

Roseman, after running his first halfmile in 53 2-ssec, completed seven furlongs in lmin 41 3-ssec. He should show up at Oamaru.

Moneyless, on whom L. J. Ellis is likely to have the mount, was to have gone with Roseman, but broke away shortly after reaching the track.

- Valarth jumped two hurdles in brilliant style, and he will carry' plenty of support from this quarter at Trentham. ' • ''

[ Monipere is going north tomorrow with A. E. Didham's team, and Great Pal will be crossing over tonight.

F. Shaw is undecided about going to Trentham. Valantua went very well this morning; and if his form at Oamaru works out well, he may make the trip. _____
