FAIR TO FINE

MILD TEMPERATURES Special forecast for Wellington:-— Light south-westerly winds, turning later to the north-west and freshening. Weather fair to fine, with mild temperatures.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for north-westerly winds at first in the Hawke's Bay Province. Elsewhere westerly to south-westerly winds may be expected, but winds will later tend north-westerly again about and south of Cook Strait and will be strong at times in part of the strait. Winds elsewhere will for the most part be light to moderate. The Weather for the most part will be fair to cloudy, but changeable with occasional showers in most districts, especially in those with a westerly aspect. Temperatures will be moderate. The depression which was located off the West Coast yesterday deepened considerably and developed two centres. The more northerly of the two crossed the middle portion of the country last night. Yesterday morning north-easterly winds were blowing over most of the country and in many places gale force was reached, especially in the Westland, Nelson, Taranaki, and Auckland Provinces. A change to winds between north-west, and south-west, however, gradually extended over the northern and southern portions of the Dominion. By 9 a.m. today north-westerlies or westerlies were prevailing over the North Island, these being strong in the South Taranaki Bight, and light to fresh southwesterlies over the South Island. Rain has been almost general, and about the low-pressure centre mentioned above it has been heavy, Cape Egmont reporting a fall of 281 points and Wellington having one of 131 points. This morning there was some improvement in the weather, broken skies with ohly scattered showers being reported. Pressure is still rather low, however, over south-eastern Australia, and consequently one or more westerly depressions can be expected to follow that of yesterday. During the northerly gale at Hokitika yesterday there were exceptionally heavy seas and phenomenal tides.

Auckland had continuous rain yesterday morning, when a north-easterly wind reached gale force in places. About noon, however, the wind changed to a moderate westerly and the weather in the afternoon was fair. Temperatures were mild, the maximum being 61 degrees and the minimum 47.9 degrees. The rainfall totalled 59 points. In Wellington rain fell .fairly continuously during the afternoon and night, 131 points being recorded at Kelburn. It ceased early this morning and the sky hag* since cleared, the wind having changed to a moderate southerly. Temperatures have continued mild, yesterday's maximum being 54.1 degrees and the minimum 46.5 degrees.

Christchurch had overcast and hazy weather. A moderate north-easterly breeze changed in the. evening to a south-westerly and light rain commenced to fall. This morning a fresh south-westerly was still blowing, but the weather had improved somewhat. The rainfall totalled 35 points. Temperatures were moderate, with a maximum of 52.1 degrees and a minimum of 44 degrees.

Dunedin had a light northerly breeze at first, but this turned to the south during the morning and the weather became dull and showery, showers falling at night again. The rainfall totalled !32 points and temperatures were mild. It was still cloudy this morning and somewhat cooler.
