BRIEF SITTING

OPENING OF PARLIAMENT Formal business only was transacted by the House of Representatives after the official opening of Parliament yesterday afternoon and was disposed of in about ten minutes, the adjournment being moved by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) at 3.7 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. today.

Numerous petitions were presented' but there were only two notices of questions, in marked contrast to the usual large number given on opening day. The proceedings were also shortened by the fact that no former legislators had died during the recess and accordingly formal tributes were unnecessary. The attendance of members was good, there being only a dozen or so absentees, for several of whom leave of absence was granted.

In reply to the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. A. Hamilton), the Prime Minister said that it was proposed this afternoon to take the Imprest Supply Bill and to open the Address-iri-Reply Debate tomorrow night.

Mr. Hamilton: And on Friday? Mr. Savage: We will continue right on.

As previously announced, the Address in Reply will be moved by Dr. I). G. McMillan (Government, Dunedin West) and seconded by Mr. B. Roberts (Government, Wairarapa).

The Legislative Council met after thy visitors to the opening of Parliament left the chamber. A message was received from the Governor-General announcing the reappointment of Sir Walter Carncross as a member of the Council. The Hon. F. E. Lark (Auckland) gave notice that he would move the Address jn Reply today. The Council then adjourned.
