FLOOD DAMAGE
SURVEY OF AREAS ASKED
The recent serious and damaging floods in Hawke's Bay and elsewhere emphasised the need for land drainage, Mr. E. L. Cullen (Government, Hawke's Bay) stated in the House of Representatives yesterday when asking a question on behalf of himself and tne Hon. W. E. Barnard. .(Government, Napier). The floods also showed there was need for reafforestation and a reduction of the growing numbers of deer, he added.
Mr. Cullen asked the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) if the Government would take early steps to have a complete survey by a fully competent authority of those portions of New Zealand where flood trouble arose with a view to preventing the denudation and breaking away of hill country, and ensuring the proper control of dangerous rivers, more particularly in the headwater and catchment areas.' .
