PARLIAMENT OPENED

A DRIZZLY DAY many new faces around As a general rule the opening of Parliament with its various ceremonies draws a very large assemblage of people outside Parliament Buildings, but the continual drizzle yesterday damped the ardour of most of those who usually gather "together to witness the arrival of their Excellencies and j suite, and his Excellency's inspection of the guard of honour. There was thus but a small crowd in the Parliamentary grounds, while in the galleries of the Legislative Council there were quite a number of new faces, and it was possible to be glad that opportunity was given to more people to sec the ceremony which is quite an old-world one, and honoured throughout the Empire in much the same way. The calling of the Legislative Council members in their formal evening dress, brightened much by the presence of four Judges of the realm all in scarlet robes in a place of honour

near the "throne," the presentation of bouquets by "Mr. Speaker"-and always such charming ones, and the ceremony of the "Black Rod ca^ I "§ "Faithful Commons," aroused much mi terest, especially among those who had not seen the opening of Parliament before. it occurred to some that it is a pity some arrangement cannot be made whereby the quite young people of the city may have a small gallery allocated to them in order to let them see one of the few formal ceremonies which remain in these matter-of-fact tU The ladies privileged to be on the floor of the Council Chamber included Lady Carncross (in a black costume with pale pink vest, and a black Breton hat with a white quill), Lady (navy costume with self-toned braiding, small velvet hat with pastel motif), Mrs. P. Jones (midnight blue ensemble, with brown fur stole and matching velvet hat), and Mrs. W. Nash (grotto blue tailleur and hat to match trimmed with a lighter tone, brown fox furs). Whan all were seated her Excellency arrived attended by Captain Stuart- | French A.D.C. She was met at the door of the Council Chamber by the Clerk of Parliaments, Mr. C. M. Bothamley, who conducted her to the dais where Sir Walter Carncross presented her with a bouquet of carnations and roses with maidenhair fern. Lady Galway was wearing a frock of golden brown chifion velvet, and a turban toque of gold tissue with a fringe round the crown of black ospreys, and a tailored cape of sable fU His Excellency was preceded by the "Black Rod" (Captain Douglas Bryan) and followed by representatives of the army and navy as well as by his own personal staff officers, and the "Speech from the Throne" was de-
