BRADMAN'S RECORD

HIGH AGGREGATES When Bradman took strike in Australia's second innings at Lord's yesterday he required only 18 runs to have placed to his credit another record in the realm of big cricket, J. B. Hobbs, now retired from Test cricket, had scored the greatest number of runs in England-Australia Tests —a total of 3636 for the 71 innings and scored at an average of 54.26. That record seemed to be within Bradman's grasp, and it did not take him long yesterday to set a new high mark for a batsman in Tests. His aggregate was carried to 3721, and in making that total he has had 44 innings. With four "not outs" to his credit, his average works out at 93.02. For figures like that a batsman can be nothing else than a cricket wonder man.

In the matter of aggregates there have been some other achievements of note in the Test just concluded. Before setting out on what proved to be a stupendous task, performed magnificently, in the first innings, Brown needed 177 runs to complete his 1000 for the tour. Not only did he reach that mark but he went on to join the select band of those who have scored double-centuries in Test cricket and the more select company of those who have carried their bat through an innings of a Test.

The scores published for the first Test were not quite correct in some details, but they have now been checked up in compiling the averages. Hassett's figures were affected. This player made 1 in the first innings of the first Test, so that yesterday he wanted 25 runs to complete his 1000 for the tour. He topped the fourflgure mark with a scorc of 42. Others to score 1000 runs on the tour are Bradman, Badcock, and Brown. Fingleton's total now stands at 915.
