PENSION PLAN

PROPOSED EXTENSION TO APPLY TO EVERYBODY In order to correct any impression that the extension of the Government's superannuation scheme applies only to civil servants and other superannuitants, the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) said today that the extension embraces everybody. "Public servants were mentioned," he said, "merely as an example of how the extension of the proposals would apply, but the benefit will go to everyone, whether a public servant or not. It has got to be clearly established in everyone's mind that for purposes of the national superannuation everybody is in exactly the same position as any public servant. "It is the income that counts, and this is a nearer approach to the universal superannuation. As I have said half a dozen times, it is only the beginning of the scheme. We set out to make it £208, and after hearing the evidence —and what is the use of hearing evidence unless one takes notice of it—we set out to take it up to the higher reaches—up to £6 a week. But those on the higher income will get less from the national superannuation fund than those getting under £208."
