MURK OVER AUSTRIA

The Blue Danube under Nazi jurisdiction seems blue indeed, says the "New York Times." All reports from Austria agree that the old gaiety has departed in a pall of gloom. Now comes news from Prague that the spring tourist traffic, which was one of the most thriving industries of the free nation, has fallen to practically nothing. An analysis of the figures of the official Austrian (now German) tourist bureaus shows that against the tens of thousands of foreigners who formerly flocked happily into Austria during April few now care to put up at the Sign of the Swastika. During the month the number of foreign visitors dropped to 110 for the whole of Austria, despite exceptionally favourable weather. German visitors accounted for only 770 more. This is a serious matter to the elaborate hotel system of Vienna and the Tyrol, but people just cannot be persuaded to make merry in a graveyard.
