England and France have warned Japan that occupation of Hainan Island would be likely to lead to undesirable complications and that in the event of such an incident they would no doubt collaborate as was necessary. An announcement to this effect was made by the Under-Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Mr. R. A. Butler, in the House of Commons., The warning to Japan not only concerns Hainan Island but also other Chinese islands in the vicinity of Hong Kong and Indo-China. Britain has already, either singlehanded or with the French, lodged five protests, to which the Japanese have replied that they have no territorial ambitions.
