OVERCAST SKIES

RAIN AT TIMES Special forecast for Wellington:— Light to moderate northerly winds, turning more westerly in direction and freshening. Weather cloudy to overcast, with rata at times. Temperatures moderate. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for moderate north-westerly or westerly winds in North Auckland and Otago. Elsewhere moderate to strong northeasterlies or northerlies may be expected, gale force being reached in places, but a change to north-westerlies to south-westerlies should, however, become general within the next twentyfour hours. The weather will be cloudy to overcast, with intermittent and fairly general rain. Some heavy falls are probable in the South Island. Temperatures will be mild, to moderate. The depression centred yesterday near Norfolk Island has moved southward and has deepened, its centre at 9 ajn. today being off the West Coast. North-easterly to northerly winds have prevailed over most of the country, and have been strong in many places with gales, especially in Auckland and Taranaki. In the extreme northern and south-western portions of the Dominion, where cold fronts have passed, the wind has changed to the north-west or west. The depression should pass tonight, but pressure is still rather low over eastern Australia, and it is likely that a secondary will follow it. Skies in most places have become cloudy to overcast, and, except in eastern districts, rain has either fallen or appears imminent. Temperatures have become milder. Amongst the heavier rainfalls reported are: Cape Maria Van Diemen, 170 points; Russell, 108 points; and Jackson's Bay, 135 points. Auckland's weather yesterday was overcast, with occasional rain, which totalled 15 points. North-easterly winds were strong at times, and temperatures were mild, the maximum being 59.1 degrees and the minimum 52.9 degrees. Wellington experienced a mild day with a moderate northerly breeze, 6.1 hours of bright sunshine being recorded. The sky, however, became overcast during the afternoon. It was clear again early this morning, but it again became overcast with occasional _ light rain. The maximum and minimum temperatures yesterday were 54.6 and 43.5 degrees respectively. In Christchurch it was rather cloudy and hazy with cool temperatures, the maximum being 50.3 degrees and the minimum 41.4 degrees. A moderate north-easterly breeze has prevailed, and it was still overcast this morning, although no rain had fallen. In Dunedin the sky yesterday became overcast. The wind, a fresh one from the north-east, had turned by this morning to the north-west, but up to 9 ajn. today no rain had fallen. Temperatures have been mild there also.
