Mr. C. T. Halstead, of Auckland, r®< turned by the Aorangi after spending three months at the head office of the Pacific Cable Board in London. He has been appointed manager in New Zealand, and will have his headquarters in Auckland. The Rev. R. R. Adair, of Southbridge, Canterbury, left Auckland by the Mariposa yesterday to take up pei> manent residence in the United States. Mr. Adair, who was accompanied by his wife and three children, has accepted a teaching fellowship at Columbia University, New York City. Messrs. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., chairman, J. H. Jerram, A. E. Reynolds, and A. S. Houston, members of the Public Service Appeal Board, are to leave Wellington for Auckland tomorrow night to resume the hearing of appeals from Auckland and the surrounding districts against the reclassification of the Public Service. Advice of the appointment of Mr. D. F. McEwen to the plumbing advis- | ory committee of the Wellington Technical College was received by the Board of Governors at the meeting last night. He replaces Mr. D. Parnell, who has retired from his position oa the Wellington City Council staff, and who has relinquished his position as chairman of the committee. In his re« port to the board the director, Mr. R. G. Ridling, said that Mr. Parnell's long experience of plumbing work in Wellington had made him a valuable adviser to the board and that the plumbing advisory committee had asked at its last meeting that by some means his services on that committee might be retained and that he be invited to remain on the committee as a representative of the board. On the motion of Mr. C. H. Nicholls it was decided to record the board's appreciation of Mr. Parnell's services and to ask him to remain on the advisory committee. A motion of deep regret at the death of Sir Truby King, founder of the . Royal New Zealand Society for the i Health of Women and Children, was carried in the customary manner at the society's annual branch meeting yesterday, on the motion of the Mayof (Mr. T. C. A.
