AVOIDING A CROSSING

(To the Editor.) Sir,—As a motorist who crosses the Petone railway crossing all the year round may I make a suggestion through your paper? This crossing is one of the most used in ilie -country, *

especially during the peak hours of work and the weekends. The total number of actual deaths from smashes is fortunately small but the damage to property, such as cars, and physical disablement are great. Might I suggest that instead of taking local men in the Public Works Department to work in the outlying suburbs of Wellington City, such as Miramar, and thus losing one day's pay (16s) per fortnight a start be made to continue the main road right through (on the left side of the railway going north) to connect with the Western Hutt Road, thus making a decided improvement in the access to the Capital City and above all giving local work to local men. The road has to be completed eventually so an early start would be welcome.—X am, etc., URGENT.
