HOPE GIBBONS SHIELD

The 25 miles senior and 16 miles junior race for the Hope Gibbons Shield on Saturday afternoon attracted . considerable attention, there being a , large crowd present at the finish. The Port Nicholson A team, last years 1 champions, again • gained fastest time ' in the senior race, although J. Wilson was forced to drop out. In the junior event the young Petone team kept a steady pace and scored a convincing win, showing good;.team work in their first big event. The results were:— Senior Race.—Port Nicholson A (O. Disley captain, G. Amey, R. Stevens, J. Wilson, W. Keighley), 1. Time, 57 min 40sec. Poneke A, 2. Time, 58mm 59sec. Petone A, 3. Time, 60min 21 Junior Race. —Petone A (P. Pollock, P. Anderson, D. Biggs, H. Laurie), 1. Time, 39min 49sec. Poneke A, 2. Time, 40min; Port Nicholson B, 3. Time, 40min-20sec. CASH CLUB'S RACE. The Wellington Cash Cycling Club held a 30 miles race from the Grand National Hotel, Petone, to the Brown | Owl Tearooms and back, on Saturday afternoon. Fast times were recorded. 'In. a good battle for first place Sayers beat Percival by inches. A similar finish was witnessed for third place between the Taranaki rider L. Woods and A. Wright, the local man being given the placing. During the side home Woods overrode Wright's wheel, both crashing, with minor damage to themselves and cycles. But for this mishap the pair would have secured fastest time. The scratch men finished together in a brilliant sprint, Martin prevailing by two lengths from Houston.
