POST OFFICE SURVEYORS

With the advance of regionalisation in the Post Office the position of surveyor will be abolished, says the "Manchester Guardian." It is a very old term and was correctly applied to men who in the early days rode about the countryside fixing the travelling distances of the post-boys and drawing up time schedules. The journeys werelong and travelling conditions rough, but quite a number of surveyors found opportunities for a ride with the hounds and social intercourse with the • countryfolk. In recent years, however, the train and motor-car were the means of travel, and comfortable hotels in towns have replaced the old village inns, while telegraphs and telephones have added to the work. Surveyors have always been regarded as the most experienced postal officials, and the London regional area, claimed to be working satisfactorily, was set in order by a surveyor from the country who boasted at his "good-bye meeting" recently that his training in the "provinces" was his biggest asset.
