PENNY INCREASE

LOWER HUTT RATES STATEMENT BY MAYOR A statement that the rate increase in the borough for this financial year would be Id in the £ unimproved value, was made by the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. J. W. Andrews) today. Last year's consolidated rate was 9|d and this year's is 10id. Mr. Andrews said that the aniount being asked for was the minimum necessary to carry on essential borough works for the year. Costs of all services continued to mount and the council was reluctantly compelled to pass on these costs.
