PENNY INCREASE
LOWER HUTT RATES STATEMENT BY MAYOR A statement that the rate increase in the borough for this financial year would be Id in the £ unimproved value, was made by the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. J. W. Andrews) today. Last year's consolidated rate was 9|d and this year's is 10id. Mr. Andrews said that the aniount being asked for was the minimum necessary to carry on essential borough works for the year. Costs of all services continued to mount and the council was reluctantly compelled to pass on these costs. Some idea of the increases could be gathered from the following comparative figures, for the years 1929-30 (pre-slump) and last year: ~ 1029-30. 1937-38. £ s. d. £ s- d' Fire prevention .. 681 14 1 1118 8 9 IK :::: eill i I II 8 Streets maintenance 5098 6 0 10,493 18 4 Paths maintenance 369 6 5 10-0 0. l All of these items showed further estimated increases for the year 193839 As a contrast on the revenue side, building permits produced £ 1358 10s in 1929-30, as against only £587 last year. The cost of the permits had not been reduced.
