TRENTHAM TRIALS

ESSEX TO RUN IN SIXES

(By "Rangatlra.")

After the heavy rain during the week there was not a great deal of fast work on the Trentham tracks this morning, but most of the horses engaged at the coming meeting were sent along on useful tasks. The trial grass had recovered well from its drenching, but it was naturally still heavy.

Sigurd (A. G. P. Newnham) and Phil (G. Flood) ran half a mile in 55 sec. Debham (Newnham) broke 52 sec. These horses will probably have only a single race each at the meeting and then go south to Riccarton.

Yours Truly <L. T. Nesbitt) and Punerua (R. L. Hitchen) ran five furlongs in 'lmin 6sec, and Essex (Nesbitt) did half a mile in 52 3-ssec. Essex is to resume racing at the Wellington Meeting, where he will contest the open sprints. Sunee (Nesbitt) was running on well in beating Red Sun (S. G. Robinson) by a length and a half over a mile in lmin 51 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 56 sec. Sunee's splint is disappearing and it no longer troubles him. Royal Show (J. Nicholson) was half a length in front of Gay Hunting (V. Bevan) after an easy six furlongs, the last half-mile in 58sec. Kinloch (P. Power) did five furlongs comfortably in lmin lOsec. Liane (W. Doyle) was just ahead of Rockingham (T. Young) after half a mile in 54sec. Matoru (A. E. Bennet) was several lengths in front of Arctic King (Doyle), with Sunbeam (R. Hawes) further back, after six furlongs in lmin 20 sec, the last half-mile in 54sec. Arctic King stopped over the closing stages, but Sunbeam was finishing on after drifting badly in the early portion. Fairy Dale (R. D. Gerrard) was a length too good for Quexona (A. Foster) over five furlongs, the last halfmile in 52sec. Jewish Lad (Hawes) did a mile at a swinging pace in lmin 55sec, the last half-mile in 57sec. Batsham (Doyle) was going well a couple of lengths ahead of Coronado (Gerrard), with Protectress (Bennet) some lengths away, after running five furlongs in lmin Bsec> the last halfmile in 54sec. Protectress loafed early, but was making up leeway at the close. 1 Raroa, who is now being trained by her owner, Mr. E. J. Adams, at Stokes Valley, was on the track. This Colossus filly has filled out lately and may prove useful in the hack" class next season. She is engaged in mile events at Trentham. The only schooling this morning was a bout over four hurdles by Lustra I (M. Reardon), who jumped easily and faultlessly. This horse will probably be going to Marton next week. H. A. Telford made a reappearance on the track this morning after his illness, and he was warmly welcomed by his brother trainers. He will not be actively e/igaged with his team for some time yet, but he was back in his usual post training them and he saw most of the work through. He mentioned that the Safari youngster in his team was not out of Joybird but out of the Paper Money mare Sight Draft, a sister to Noteworthy.

A SEVERE LOSS

DEATH OF WATERWINGS (Special to the "Evening Post.") WANGANUI, This Day. Advice has been received that the Absurd mare Waterwings died on Thursday afternoon. As she was carrying a filly foal by Spiral, one of the first of the Limond horse's crop, the loss is a severe one to the Koatanui studmaster, Mr. G. M. Currie. Bred by Mr. Currie and foaled in 1920, Waterwings was a chestnut mare by Absurd from the Seaton Delaval mare Sea Elf, and she had produced ten foals at Koatanui. Nine of these were sold at an average of about 930 guineas, and two of them topped the

2000 mark. As recently as last January the Limond colt out of Waterwings was sold at 1000 guineas at the National Yearling Sales at Trentham. Among Waterwing's progeny were Agrion, winner of the New Zealand Derby, Zetes, a record-priced yearling, Chile, a useful and versatile winner, Waikare, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap among other important events in Australia, Water Polo, White Wings, and others. The last of her progeny is now at Koatanui, and is a bay colt by Ringmaster, and there will be a considerable amount of interest in this youngster's progress. Though she was 18 years old, Waterwings was not beyond the useful stage as far as the matrons' paddock is concerned, and her demise will leave a gap at Koatanui, in spite of the fact that Mr. Currie has upwards of thirty mares, imported and of his own breeding.
