SALES AT MAIN CENTRES

Fewer cattle were marketed at Westfield yesterday in consequence of the decline in values last week, but there was no further decrease. The quality generally was not extra prime, but there was a keen demand for all classes. Sheep prices improved by about Is a head for all prime quality sorts, others being quoted firm. There was a full yarding, and ewes were m best demand. Lambs were offered in increased numbers at the firm rates of 17s to 27s for the primest, and 7s to 16s 6d for smaller and unfinished stock. A smaller yarding of calves sold under better demand, prices improving by about 3s a head. A much reduced entry of pigs sold at fully late rates; in odd cases prices showed decided improvement. The quality of the entry of fat cattle for the Burnside stock sale was below that of the previous sale, only a few trucks of prime heavy cattle being forward. Values were slightly easier from the commencement, but firmer as the sale progressed, only light and unfinished sorts being difficult to sell. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report that a small yarding of cattle and an average yarding of sheep were offered at yesterday s Johnsonville sale. The bullocks were chiefly heavyweight cattle, with a few pens of light and unfinished sorts. Competition for prime heavy bullocks was keen, while lightweight and unfinished cattle were not sought after. A good sale resulted for cows and heifers, with no alteration. Vealers met with a good demand at late rates. The yarding of wethers was of exceptionally good quality, with all classes meeting with a ready sale at prices for prime heavy wethers firm on last week's, while light and unfinished were slightly easier. Extra prime heavy ewes were keenly sought after, with no alteration, while lightweight and plain sheep were hard to sell. No heavy lambs came forward, the yarding consisting of lightweight and plain lambs, with prices showing no alteration. Quotations are as follows:— Prime extra heavy bullocks, £16 10s to £15 ss; prime heavy bullocks, £15 to £14; heavy bullocks, £13 18s to £13 12s; light and unfinished bullocks, £11 10s to £10 10s; extra prime heavy cows and heifers, £9 to £8 12s; prime heavy cows and heifers, £8 5s to £7 7s 6d; cows and heifers, £6 18s to £6 ss; runners and vealers, £2 18s to 22s 6d. Fat sheep and fat cattle were in over-supply at today's weekly Addington market, and there was an easing in values in these two sections. There was little change in the other classes of stock. Store sheep: A few pens of poor grade ewes and some wethers provided the entry. A line of 184 wethers sold from 18s to 19s 3d; ordinary two-tooth ewes, 20s. Fat sheep: About 6500 were penned, the quality being' somewhat better. Big wethers held recent values until well on in the sale, but eased in the final stages and ewes were down by Is to Is 6d a head, there being passings in the final stages. Best wethers sold from 28s to 31s; tops, to 33s 7d; med-ium-weight prime, 23s to 275; others, down to 18s; best ewes, to 2256 d; tops, to 26s 6d; medium, 17s to 20s; light, down to 12s. ~ , , ~ Fat cattle: Lighter weights held their values fairly well until the final stages, when they eased in sympathy with the heavyweights, which were down on the rates of last week by up to 15s a head. Good steers made £13 to £14; tops, to £17 12s 6d, Sum, £11 10s'to £12 15s; light down to £8 10s; best heifers, £8 10s to £11; medium, £7 to £8 ss; best cows, £8 to £11; light down to £4. Fat pigs: Small entries and a keen sale until the final stages, baconers being up by 4s to 5s a head. Porkers brought 48s 6d to 59s 6d, an average Mice a lb of 6Jd to 7Jd; baconers, £3 4s 6d to £5 19s 6d, an average price a lb of 6id to 7^d.
