MOTORING CASES
PETONE COURT
A number of motoring cases came before Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Petone Court yesterday. Senior-Ser-geant H. iC. D. Wade prosecuted. William'Johnston "Reid was fined £ 1 and costs for negligently driving a motor-car on the Hutt Road and ordered to pay costs for not carrying a warrant of fitness. The defendant made an error of judgment, said Mr, E. F. Rothwell, who appeared for Reid. There was a tendency on the part of drivers to cut the corner at the WoolI len Mills. The driver of the other car was more or less on the wrong side i and his client, in attempting to avoid (this car, also got on to the wrong side.
Leslie Brownie Ward pleaded not fuilty to a charge of driving without iue care and attention. George Cofey, of Moera, said that at 6.40 p.m. >n May 22 he was driving his motor:ar in Ludlam Crescent. A cat ran icross the road and he pulled up to ivoid it, after giving a signal. He vas struck from behind by the'de'endant's car. He was pushed 40 or iO feet and a certain amount of dam»ge was done to his car. Evidence vas also given by Robert Ford and Watilda Jones, who were passengers n the car, and Constable Satherley. Ward said he did not see Coffey give i signal and he pulled up 10 suddenly hat a collision could not be avoided, rhe Magistrate said that Ward was apjarently travelling so close to the ither car that he could not stop his :ar in time in case of an emergency. \ fine of 10s and, costs £2 4s would ae imposed.For driving his motor-car in Cuba street without due care and attention, 3uia James Courtney, who pleaded not »uilty, was fined 10s and costs. Sara Payes and Herbert Hadley Jesibp were each charged with driving without due care and attention. The :harges were taken together. The case :6ncerned a collision in Bell Road, on May 1, between a van driven by Jesiop and a car which Mrs. Payes ■> was learning to drive. Fines of 10s and :osts were imposed in each case. Gordon Vernon Wallace was fined 30s and costs for exceeding 25 m.p.h., which was the maximum speed for which his vehicle was licensed. Inspector A. C. Crawford, of the Transport Department, prosecuted this case. ■-~'■'.''"!
