FREE PORTRAITS BY 'PHONE

The latest activity of the Works Progress Administration—one of the American New Deal's most active jobmaking projects—is .to offer free oil portraits of themselves to all public officials who can prove that they are sufficiently important to merit the honour, says the "Daily Telegraph and Morning Post." A telephone call to W.P.A. headquarters is all that is necessary- Not only does ths W.P.A. pay the artist, but it also undertakes to provide a suitable public niche in which to hang the finished portrait. At present only eight artists are on the list, but enough applications have already been received to provide fulltime work for at least 100. The pictures remain the property of the Federal Government, but they can be borrowed for exhibition by States or cities. -— - -
