WEST COAST VISIT
MINISTER OF DEFENCE

WESTFORT, June 20. The Minister of Defence and Post-master-General (the Hon. F. Jones) spent this afternoon inspecting Pakihi lands at Fairdown. This land comprises 1500 acres and carries some' 300 head of cattle, also giving winter feed in crops of hay. The Minister was very favourably impressed with progress made in farming this land. The Minister also visited Denniston, inspecting works at the brake-head, and later left for Ngakawau, where he was asked to provide a post office on a more central site.
The Minister was the guest of the Hector and Stockton Miners' Unions, and, in reply to speeches, expressed particular pleasure at the remarks of Major Poter, who stressed the good twork done by him as Minister of Defence In arranging for the instruction o fofneers in the finer points of tactics. The Minister was this, evening the guest of local bodies in Westport at dinner, and in reply to speeches of welcome expressed the opinion that he was highly impressed with the possibilities of Westport as an airport.
