NEW SCHOOLROOM

PRINCESSES IN THE COUNTRY

A new schoolroom has been planned at Royal Lodge by the Queen for Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, states the "Daily Telegraph."

Although the Princesses usually go down to Royal Lodge only at the weekend, there are times, particularly in the spring and autumn, when they stay there longer, and have to resume lessons. / Walls and ceiling of the new schoolroom have been painted a deep Devonshire cream colour. The furniture is of natural oak and applewood. Book-cases stretch all along one wall of the room. NO DESKS. Each Princess has her work cupboard, where all writing books and painting materials are kept. An up-to-date map of the world covers the whole of one wall. Instead of desks, as at Buckingham Palace, the Princesses have a round table of natural oak at which they do their lessons. At other times it is used for jigsaw puzzles and for arranging their photograph and postcard collections. Curtains are of deep rose-pink percale and the carpet has a coffeecoloured pile. Queen Mary has taken a warm interest in this country schoolroom for her granddaughters. Among her contributions to its equipment have been a set of lives of famous poets, painters, and musicians, bound in deep blue, and a number of simple books in French and German for Princess Elizabeth.
