CITY BURGLARY
JEWELLER'S SHOP
MONEY AND GOODS STOLEN
For the second time in the past two months thieves entered the premises of J. B. Lauchlan, Ltd:, watchmakers and jewellers, Woodward Street, Wellington, early this morning, stealing money to the value of £9, and a number of valuable watches and rings. Mr. Lauchlan also conducts a jewellery business in Manners Street, and last night's burglary constitutes the seventh at the two shops during the past two years. The thieves forced an entry into the Woodward Street shop through a window at the top of a fire escape in an alley running alongside the shop. A jemmy or similar instrument was used to force open the door of the cashorder office on the first floor, and the upstair quarters were ransacked. It was from here that the money was taken. The thieves next forced open the door leading into the shop itself, and among the articles removed were a number of watches, sixteen valuable wedding rings, and a number of solid gold cigarette cases. Some jewellery that was being repaired was also stolen. An exit was attempted on the ground floor, but, apparently disturbed, the thieves returned upstairs and left in the same manner in which they had entered.
The police are investigating.
