HUTT VALLEY NEWS

DIGGERS' "FAMILY" NIGHT

(From "The Post's" Representative.)

Miss Eva Draper's studio, Lower Hutt, was the cheerful "location" for a large private party on Saturday night arranged amongst the members of the staff of the United Products division of General Motors (N.Z.), Ltd. "If winter comes . . appeared to be the motif of the decorations, for while the hundreds of tiny "snowflakes" hanging from the roof were a timely reminder of the chilly night outside, vases of golden jonquils ranged along the gallery above the band alcove scented the air with a fragrant promise of spring, and were effectively used with birch foliage on the long tables in the supper-room. Excellent music was supplied by the orchestra, who made a feature of the swing numbers, and the arrangement of the dance was in the hands of Mr. H. R. Kinge and Mr. G. Beu.

R.S.A. Dance. Members of the Lower Hutt branch < of the Returned Soldiers' Association were hosts on Saturday night at a i family party held in the clubrooms ; to entertain their wives and children. The programme, well selected to suit all tastes, included the following items which met with enthusiastic applause: Songs by Mrs. F. Potter (mezzo-so-prano), Mr. T. J. Hopkins (baritone), Miss Joan Alters, Mr. Du Four and Mesdames Potter and F. Stedman (duet), tap dance by Miss Ray Spiers, Hungarian dance by Miss Barbara Dawson, and an exhibition by Mr. Gilbertson of performing dogs. A hilarious competition involving yards of machine cotton and sugar lumps was run off in several heats and resulted in a win for Mrs. O. Kibblewhite and Miss Eileen Lastelle. Mr. F. Page was the efficient M.C., and Mrs. M. Smith the accompanist and pianist for the dance numbers. Supper was served by members of the Ladies' Auxiliary, and the many children present were delighted with a special sitting to themselves in a quadrangle in the centre of the room. Ex-Pupils' Dance. The new assembly hall of the Hutt Valley High School is greatly apprer ciated by ex-pupils who held a most successful dance there on Saturday , night. With the excellent music of a ladies' orchestra from Petone, a "fine floor, and Mr. F. McLoughlin as M.C., dancing conditions were ideal, and a 1 large number of enthusiastic young [ people spent a thoroughly enjoyable j evening.
