AMERICAN NAVAL TESTS

PHILADELPHIA, June 4.

The Navy made secret tests of a new shell-proof hull by exploding charges of dynamite against it on a raft on the Delaware River.

All vessels were ordered to stand clear. Studies to determine the effect of simulated torpedo fire on a caisson which was supposed to be made up of a series of watertight compartments were begun after the explosion.

The new design has been developed from the so-called "blister" hull introduced by the British Navy during the war.

New battleships are expected to be armour-plated above as well as below decks, to enable them to withstand aerial bombg-as-well as~torpedoei..
