MASTERTON BEAT HUTT

VALLEY

The outstanding event of the weekend, when most clubs were out, was the winning of the annual five-mile race for the Sanders Cup by Masterton from Hutt Valley at Masterton, by a margin of 33 points.

The course comprised good variety, swampy grassland, several fences, and a nice stretch of road, the runners finishing in front of the grandstand on the Masterton Oval. Masterton, with a strong team, which included W. Pullar (the Empire Games representative) and showed excellent teaming, gained a comfortable, victory. Fifty runners started and the winner, G. Gregory, put up a good performance in the good time of 29min 35sec, defeating Pullar by over 200 yards, with V. Smith (Hutt Valley) a hundred yards back in third position. METHODIST CLUB. A six-mile run over rough and hilly country was made by the Methodist Club from .Webb Street. To give members respite from club and inter-club races, the packs included runners of all grades, and a socjal spirit was much in evidence. The rough going suited-R. Ingram -and-F. Thorley; both of whom are approaching last year's championship form. R. Wiseman; H. Plank, T. Ninnes,' and G. Thompson showed up prominently. Next week the club will entertain the Auckland Wesley Club, and a race will be held from the Miramar Tennis Club's pavilion. All members are urged to be present. OLYMPIC CLUB. The Olympic Club held its 'Grand Memorial race and Old Members' Day at Miramar Tennis Courts. There was a good. attendance. A strong field of 28 lined up for. the Memorial Race of five rciileg, run twice around the-Mira-mar course. .Fortunately- the . weather conditions were good, as this trail is arduous'.- - • - ' ! The field was well bunched until the swamp was reached in the paddocks, and then the faster members of the field, headed by-Lovatt, Sunderland, Fisher,, and Hyde went well away. Up' the gully, and over the hills to Puriri, the lead was increased, and the field was well strung out. E. Lovatt, who was running well, had the lead second time put, and maintaining his advah- 1 tage came home a good winner. O. Fisher was second. D. Hyde,, who was third, gave a sterling performance. He is a new member and promises to db f Well in inter-club races. G. Murray;fourth, ran consistently well' and was with the leaders all the way.

Bezer (4min 35sec), 38min 20sec, was second, and takes the Burn Cup. H. Service (4min 35sec), 39min lsec, was third, and takes the Wilson Cup. Next Saturday the run will be from the Karori Council Chambers. SCOTTISH CLUB. An informal run of about five miles; was held by the Scottish Club, commencing at Worser Bay. It was greatly enjoyed by the fifty runners. No trail was laid. Three packs climbed the, hill and followed the road overlooking Seatoun for its full length, then took to the hills behind StratKmore Park. Opportunity was- taken to watch, some of the' events of the air pageant, and also to indulge in wrestling bouts. After running over the hills at the backLof the" .golf links the packs returned to Worser Bay via Monorgan; Road and the Seatoun tunnel. F. Silver and B. Elleray, two prominent rimriersi were out for the first time this season. In accordance with the policy of assisting other clubs, twelve members will visit Dannevirke on Saturday to attend the harrier rally. Next week's run will be from the Te.Aro Baths, commencing at 2.45 p.m. PRESBYTERIAN CLUB. The annual inter-Bible class race for the Martin Shield was held on Saturday from St. James Church, Newtown. The distance was just over three miles, the course leading from the Public Hospital up Hospital Road to "Mount Victoria, along Alexandra Road, down to Pirie Street and the Basin Reserve; and home up Adelaide Road. Mr. A. Martin, donor .of the shield, started the 40 competitors, traffic, which was heavy at the time, being held for a few moments at John' Street. Armstrong.- Pumfrey, and Jardine went to the lead, with Seelye and Bay handy. Jardine set a good pace until near the top of the hill, when Bay and Seelye drew away. At this stage Aston, too, pulled up to a good position. From then on Bay was not troubled, and clapped on the pace up Adelaide Road, but finished quite fresh. His time was 4sec over the course record. Aston and Seelye had a race for second place, the former springing a big surprise and losing the position to Seelye by only 2sec, The times' were:—P. It was the anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Martin's wedding, and Paul Bay presented Mrs. Martin with a bouquet. Next week's run will be from the Seatoun Presbyterian Church. WELLINGTON CLUB. A three-mile invitation run was held by the Wellington Club on Saturday afternoon from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Weston, Coromahdel Street, Newtown. Twenty-two runners started, and followed the trail along the hills to Melrose and down into Kilbirnie. Erom Kilbirnie a run-in was held up Crawford Hill Road home, and resulted as "follows:—R. Jones 1, E. Chown 2, A, Cater 3. Afternoon tea was supplied by- Mr. and Mrs. Weston. . Next Saturday the teams' race for the Press Cup will be held at Lyall Bay over a five-mile course beginning at 2.30 p.m. BROOKLYN CLUB. Twenty-six members of the Brooklyn Club-faced the starter, Mr. P. Harvey, one of the club's foundation-mem-bers, to participate in the three-mile sealed handicap and novice race. M. Moir and P. Argue set a tough pace,

but going down Broadway they were joined by G. Appleby, who took the lead up Hobart Street. Pedersen and McCalman then joined Appleby. These three took the lead in turn, until Rotherham Terrace was reached, when McCalrnan took the lead with Appleby close behind. Going up Awa Road, Appleby and McCalman fought it out, but when Marine Parade was reached, McCalman proved fitter, and with a strong, steady stride; he made a break of 25 yards on Appleby, who was suffering from "stitch." Pedersen was still third, about 20 yards . behind Appleby. , , . ~ McCalman finished quite fresh, in the excellent time of 18min 58sec. Appleby took 19min 9sec, and Pedersen 19min 21sec.
