JUTLAND BATTLE
PARADE AND DINNER
About 30 former Royal Navy men paraded in Wellington last night and laid a wreath at the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial to mark the twenty-second anniversary of the Battle of Jutland; The parade assembled at the public library, and, headed by the Boys' Institute Silver Band, marched along Mercer Street arid down Willis Strtet and Lambton Quay to the memorial.
Messrs. A. Amey and B. ( Hobinson, both Jutland men, laid the wreath.
After dispersing, the men attended a dinner given by the ex-Royal Naval Men's Association. Among those present was Captain R. D. Oliver, R.N., and several ex-naval officers. Toasts were honoured as follows:— "The King,", proposed -by the chairman, Engineer Lieutenant-Commander George D. Lidgett, R.N. (rtd.); "Fallen Comrades," the chairman; "Absent Comrades," Engineer Lieutenant-Com-mander W. Earnshaw, R.N. (rtd.); "Men of Jutland," Mr. W. J. CondonMr. A. Amey; "The Royal Navy," Mr. W. A. McCabe-Captain R. D. Oliver, R.N.; '.'The Mercantile Marine," Mr. G. Palmer-Captain W. M. McLeod; "Ex-Royal Naval Men's Association," Engineer Lieutenant-Commander W. Earnshaw-Mr. H. C. Allison. Replying to the toast "The Royal Navy," Captain Oliver said the more ' he studied the Battle of Jutland the greater was his admiration for Admiral Jellicoe and Admiral Beatty. No men had ever had the opportunity of making so meny mistakes in one day and no men had ever made so few. The result of the battle could be judged by the fact that the British Fleet remained at sea and the German one did not. The Navy was still carrying on, said Captain Oliver, and it was getting back into tune. He could assure them that when the day came the Navy would be at its post
