MATSON LINERS
WELLINGTON CALL
NQ IMMEDIATE PROSPECT
As a result of correspondence received from the Matson,. Navigation Company and.Mr. B. H. Nimmo, a member of the chamber who is at present abroad, Mr. A. B. Hislop, as convener of the transport committee, reported to the Wellington Chamber of Commerce last night that there appeared to be no prospect of the Matson liners including Wellington in their itineraries within the very near future. Mr. Uimmo was requested by the chamber to present the case of Wellington Harbour as a port of call for the Matson Company's passenger liners to representatives of the company in San Francisco. Mr. Hislop said that in view of a question asked in a subleader of a northern paper as to whether Mr. Nimmo was not exceeding his authority in approaching the Matson Company, he would state, for the information of the public, that Mr. Nimmo was. fully and definitely accredited as a representative of the chamber, and that any overtures he made were made with the chamber's authority and on its behalf. The writer of the sub-leader had asked the question as the result, of an interview with Mr. Nimmo published in an American publication,, and. it. was apparent that the interview' did not correctly 'enumerate Mr. Nimmo's qualifications. Mr. Nimmohad gone overseas distinctly and.primarily in the interests of his firm's business, and the chamber justifiably had taken advantage of his trip to appoint him to represent its interest as well whilst abroad. "It seems to me," said Captain S. Holm, "that we cannot long go on in this country with our front door open and nobody calling. It is certainly to be hoped that some trans-Pacific company, will shortly include Wellington in its. itinerary." • . The correspondence from the Matson Company and Mr. Nimmo was taken in committee.
