A BUSY MONTH

MAY IN THE POST OFFICE REMINbERTO MOTORISTS May is one of the busiest, months for the Post Office, and this is not wholly due to the immense amount of work at the counters in connection with the re-licensing of motor vehicles. At least 280,000 of these transactions have, to be completed before the end of this month, and dufing the same period 450,000 or more New Zealanders will be paying their quarterly levy of 5s under the Employment Promotion Act This is now due, and the lsst date for avoiding this penalty for late payment j is May 31. r -■•■■■ Post Office activity involv-i ing extra work for the counter staffs during May is the handling of the annual declarations of income other than wages or salary. The volume Of work in this connection will be increased this year owing to the industrial and occupational census which is -being taken at the same time as the declaration of income. The census'paper has to be filled in by every male over the age of 20 years, and every female, excepting domestics, whose income exceeds £50 per annum. These are the special Post Office tasks at the counters during May, in addition to its normal business. On May 23 the Post Office will be the principal medium of distributing the old age and other classes, of pension. As several of the' activities which have been enumerated come to a climax towards the end of the month,Post Office staffs-throughout New Zealand will appreciate early attention by motoi'ists to, the re-licensing of their vehicles, so that delays to the public at the counter may be reduced and possibly avoided. 'Every endeavour is being made by the Post Office to deal expeditiously with the extra volume of business. .The re-licensing form is now curtailed to the simplest proportions, and the transaction can be carried out at any one of a thousand money-order offices distributed throughout the Dominion. If thA licence is not taken-out at the same office as last year, the original certificate of registration should be produced, or the particulars can be verified by telegraph by the Deputy Registrar at a cost of Is. Where the numbers of re-registra-tions are so large that they cannot be conveniently handled in the Post Office buildings, special arrangements are being made for more extensive office accommodation. The transport division of the Post Office reports an encouraging recognition on the part of ihotorists that they enjoy an advantage through early action, the number of licences taken' out in the first week of May having been greatly iq excess of the total for the corresponding period of last year. ! However, the officials are still anxious about possible inconvenience to . motorists through too great a concentration of the re-licensing process nearer the end of the month.
