PRESENT CONTROL BEST
That it would be a mistake to allow the Labour Party to get control of the city was the view expressed by Mr. W. J. Gaudin,' chairman of -the leasehold, libraries," and legislation committees of the City Council, who has served on the council for 18 years. He spoke of the progress the city had made in the last twenty years, and what had been done in the case of the outlying districts , taken in from time to time. The present council had raised loans for major works only, the sort of works that could not have been otherwise undertaken except with a heavy increase in rates. It had a high record, and it would not be well to change the present control. The trading departments had been kept in credit, but the attitude of the Labour candidates would seem to indicate that they did not care .whether they paid or not, or even if they went on the rates. He spoke of the extensions that had been made in the.city libraries.
