• This week held the day that we set aside each year to honour the men who did not return. "They shall not grow oU, as;we that are left grow old," writes Lawrence Binyon. "Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn." But if you went to the Cenotaph service on Arizac Day,'didyou wonder whether, perhaps, they were not so far away after all, those men who never returned? In the great silence, when only the silver notes of the bugles spoke, it seemed that they must have been very near , . . perhaps standing in shadowy ranks, shoulder to shoulder with their old comrades. And there may have been a roll-call answered, each man to his own unf or gotten name, when the bugles sent out their questing, questioning call. May there be no more war. Some of you have written, telling me that you have also noticed the quaint mixing of the seasons. I have heard of one elf's anemones which decided to bloom in dahlia-time, when by rights they should have been barely showing green heads above the ground. And another elf has seen tuis, with their white stocks "at their throats, come to exclaim over the opening flowers of the scarlet gums. Have birds and flowers fdrgotten,do you think, that winter ■ has yet to come? Letterbox Elf says: "I didn't see the sun, not what you'd call sun, for a whole week and a couple of extra days!" We'll hope the Lady Autumn throws aside her grey mantle, and chooses a golden, red-and-brown day for her visit to our page 7 My love to you all, folk of the Ring. ...... V FAIRIEL.
