Dr. Hugh Short, who has been visiting Hawke's Bay, returned to Wellington yesterday.

Mr. John Wood, Engineer-in-Chie£ and Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department, who is leaving for a holiday in Australia, was met on Thursday afternoon.by officers of the Department, who wished ' him bon voyage.

Mr. J. A. Sutherland, a student at Massey College, Palmerston North, and son of Mr. A; Sutherland, of Rangitoto, King Country, has been awarded the Farmers' Union Scholarship and the Shell Scholarship. These awards will enable him to devote a year to the pure science aspects of wool research.

Mr. A. St. C. Belcher, of Hamilton, has been nominated by the Waikato Rugby Union for a seat on the North Island Council of the New Zealand Rugby Union.

During the absence of the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. L. Martin) in Australia his portfolio will be administered by the Minister of Lands (the Hon. F. Langstone), and the Attorney-General (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) will take over Ministerial control of the National Provident Fund and Friendly Societies. Mr. Martin and his party will leave Wellington tomorrow night for Auckland, and 'will leave by the Aorangi for Sydney on Monday. He is expected back on May 26.

Mr. C. H. Wright, formerly senior draughtsman in the Land Transfer Office, Auckland, will leave Auckland tomorrow to take up the position of senior draughtsman at the head office, Lands and Survey Department, Wellington.

Messrs. R. C. and W. D. Murie, of Seatoun, will leave Auckland by the Mariposa on Monday for San Francisco. With Mr. E. C. A. Ferrier, of Christchurch, and Mr. W. B. Annabel, of Sydney, they intend motoring through America, England, and the Continent.
