METAL TRADES DISPUTE
No agreement was reached on the question of. wages,when the hearing of the Dominion metal trades industrial dispute, before Mr. S. Eitchie, Conciliation Commissioner, was adjourned yesterday afternoon. Mr. D;- J. Macdonald, of Christchurch, was the employers' agent, and Mr. G. T. Thurston was the agent for the workers. It is hoped that the award will take the place of awards covering engineers, moulders, boilermakers, stovemakers, wire workers, nail makers, metal workers' assistants, and others engaged in the iron and steel trades. The adjournment is until May 26. It was -agreed that the wage rates would operate from May 9, -provided- a substantial settlement should be reached at the council's next sitting.
