BIENNIAL ELECTION

• REPORTS ON ACTIVITIES

Meetings of householders are to be held at 7.30 p.m. on Monday for the biennial election of school committees in the Wellington district.

The annual report of the Newtown School committee states that the combined roll of the school stands at 669, while the combined average attendance for the year was 624. Thanks are accorded to the staff for their efficiency, and mention is made of the number of changes of teachers that have taken place and are likely •to take place until a teacher is allowed to gain promotion in his or her own school. The report reviews the school's excellent sporting record, and the satisfactory working of the school library. The report pays a tribute, to the co-operation given by the staff and parents, and quotes the headmaster, Mr. A. B. Charters, as saying that in no other school has he received such ungrudging help from the parents. The school's sporting record is reviewed, and reference is made to the committee's agitation for the building of an open-air classroom for the five-year-olds. During the last two years the school had increased a sub-grade, the roll having risen as high as 732. It was now a little below 700, but was expected to pass that figure with the influx of two-year-olds in the next two terms.
