LONELY VIGIL ENDS
A solitary and ceaseless vigil of six months ended this week when the look-out man stationed on the summit of Rainbow Mountain, 17 miles from Rotorua, to report the existence of any fires in the State forests in the district, was relieved of his duties for the winter months. Since the beginning of November he was required to be constantly on the alert to detect signs of fire which might threaten the thousands of acres of trees planted within the last 40 years. From the windows of his cabin he could survey on fine days, an area of several- hundred square miles. . : ; ■
