ANOTHER INCREASE
ALL ITEMS HIGHER
The first month of the financial year has proved a profitable one for Customs returns at Wellington, a considerable increase being shown in "all items. The advance shown during April, 1937, over April, 1936, was more than doubled, the net Customs revenue for the month just passed being £309,155, compared with £286,349 during April, 1937, and £276,460 in April, 1936.
During the month there was collected on motor spirit duty at 6d per gallon £44,503, compared with £43,705 in April, 1937, and £29,673 at 4d per gallon, compared with £29,137 a year ago. The total duty collected on petrol was £74,176, compared with £72,842 a year ago, an increase of £1334.
Tyre tax collected was £2522, compared with £1716 in April, 1937, an increase of £806.
Beer excise was £7332, compared with £6329., an increase of £1003.
Sales tax showed an increase of £13,714 over April of . last year, £120,026 being collected against £106,312 a year ago. Since the sales tax came into operation in February,. 1933, there has been collected in Wellington £4,755,218.
