CITY FATHERS' HOME
FIRST COUNCIL CHAMBER
A proposal is to be made to the Mayor and council by the Wellington Provincial Historical Committee that an endeavour should be made to preserve the original Wellington Council Chamber and furnishings, which have remained in the old Bethune and Hunter building, in Cornhill Street, for very many years.
Mr. W. Toomath, who raised the mattar at a meeting of the committee on Thursday evening, said that the building, made of pit-sawn totara from the Tinakori Hills, was now for sale, and if anything was to be done it would have to be done urgently. The council table and chairs were still there, and so was the old strongroom. He suggested that the building should be re-erected on the Centennial Exhibition site. • ,
The proposal will be stated by a deputation consisting 'of Dr. G. H. Scholefleld, who presided at the meeting, and Messrs. A. G. Barnett, J. Norrie, and W. Toomath.
A report on his visit to Wanganui was given by the chairman. He said that there was a keen and able committee in office there which was already doing valuable work in collecting old records. During his visits to Feilding'and Masterton he outlined the type of information required by the Wellington committee. The work and support given the committee at Wanganui, he said, was remarkably gratifying.
