MR. FLETCHER EXPLAINS
Explaining to the meeting at Brooklyn last night addressed by citizens' candidates at the local body elections why he was appearing before the electors for the first time, although he had been a member of the Harbour Board already, Mr. A. Fletcher read a letter he had received from the Minister of Marine (the Hon. P. Fraser). In it Mr. Fraser said he regretted he had been unable to arrange for. Mr. Fletcher's reappointment as the Government representative on the board. Mr. Fletcher said he had been told frankly that party considerations weighed very heavily.
"Further to our conversation of the other day in reference to the question of the Government representative on the Wellington Harbour Board, I regret to state that I have not found it possible to arrange for your reappointment," Mr. Fraser wrote. "As you indicate, you understand fully the position and its difficulties. I will send you a formal notification later. In the meantime I can only express my personal regret that I am not able to utilise your services.for another term as Government representative, for. I am fully appreciative of the sincere energy and thought you have given to the work of the board."
