MARQUESS OF MILFORD

HAVEN

The death has occurred of the Marquess of Milford Haven, a cousin ot the King.

The Marquess of Milford Haven (George Louis Victor Henry Sergius Mountbatten) was born in 1892 and succeeded his father (whose name was formerly Battenberg, but who changed it during the war), in 1921. He was the eldest son of the first Marquess and of Princess Alice, a daughter of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, who married Princess Alice, Queen Victoria's daughter. He entered the Royal Navy in 1905, and rose to the rank of commander before going on the retired list in 1932. He was present at the Battles of Dogger Bank in 1915 and Jutland in 1916 in H.M.S. New Zealand, and for his services at Jutland he received the Russian Order of St. Vladimir and the Italian Order of Savoy. In 1916 he received the X.C.V.0., in 1917 he was created Earl of Medina and Viscount Alderney, and in 1932 he was made a G.C.V.O. He married, in 1916, Nadejda, second daughter of the Grand Duke Michael of Russia, and had one son and one daughter. . His heir, the Earl of Medina, was born in 1919 and is a cadet in the Royal Navy, which he entered in 1933.
