ENGLISH SEASON EXCITES INTEREST

NEW SCORING SYSTEM IN OPERATION

(By "Not Out.")

Although the New Zealand season is now closing, there will be much to attract the attention of cricket enthusiasts during the offseason here. The English season promises to draw world-wide interest with the Australians in action again on the fields of the Home Countries. There is always considerable interest, too, in county cricket, and this season will see an entirely new system of awarding points in the county championship. For the purpose of deciding the championship the points gained are to be divided by the number of matches played (games not started not to count), and the side which has the highest average will be the champion.

Cricket reforms proposed by the| Commission of the M.C.C. did not receive much support from the Advisory County Cricket Committee. The Commission's report ran into 8000 words and included several major proposals, but only the one relating to scoring in the championship was adopted. Under the new system of deciding the championship, points will be awarded as follows:— A win outright 12 points A tie 6 points each. Side winning on first innings but losing match 4 points. First vinnings lead in an unfinished match 4 points. Tie on first innings in an unfinished ■ match 2 points each. No play or no result on first innings the match not to be included in the table of results. , The revised scoring scheme which will come into operation this year is designed to v produce' more finished matches. Points awarded to the posing side^ii an unfinislied^iaStch^iare' abolished. , . In case of no play on the first two days the match will be played under the laws for "One-Day Matches," except that' no side may declare its innings closed until it has batted at least an hour.
