A NEW MARKET

FOR DOMINION lAMB

SHARE OF CANADIAN TRADE

SHIPMENTS MADE

The opening of an important market for New Zealand lamb in Canada was announced today by the Minister of Marketing (the Hon. W. Nash), who said he felt confident that the step would lead to the development of a valuable trade in this commodity.

"For this season 8300 carcasses of lamb have already been shipped to Canada. This is a new.market," stated the Minister, "and the success of the initial shipments has been due to the activities of the New Zealand Trade Commissioner in Canada (Mr. J. W. Collins) and Mr. R. S. Forsyth, of the Meat Producers' Board, who travelled from London to Canada to assist in the marketing.

"The Government has just received news that the sale of New Zealand lamb on the Canadian market is progressing satisfactorily and that future prospects look bright. The Huntingdon recently took 3000 carcasses of lamb for delivery in Canadian eastern ports. I feel confident that the experiment will prove successful and that it will mark the commencement of a trade in lamb which will prove valuable as the years pass."

Mr. Nash said that-, during his visit to Ottawa last year he made arrangements for a reduction in the rate of duty on New Zealand lamb imported into Canada to a-half-cent per lb, and this was subsequently confirmed in the Dominion. Then after discussions with the Meat Board arrangements were completed for opening up the trade.

Mr. Nash paid a tribute to the tact and initiative of Mr. Forsyth and Mr. Collins in overcoming many of the early difficulties and gradually winning the good will of the traders.
