SYDNEY'S WILES

ADVICE TO R.S.A. VISITORS

Under the heading: "Just a Word in Your Ear, Enzed," a folder which is being, distributed amongst the New Zealand Contingent' for Sydney's Anzac Day celebrations suggests that traffic rules in Sydney's streets might puzzle visitors' a little, and that jaywalking is frowned upon especially.

Advice to "diggers" hailing from the more benighted portions of New Zealand include the observation that Sydney's police, though strict, are courteous; that, one should not cross streets diagonally, or before a signal has been given where a point-duty policeman has control of the situation, that where no such safeguard is available, one should look both ways before crossing, and that it is safer to •wait a few seconds for the next tram than to' l'isk. boarding the one which is just moving off as you reach the stop.

"Beware of strangers. You yourself, being one, may prove an easy cop for them," continues the warning, getting down to the real business of the folder. "There are some very cleverconfidence men in Sydney. They know you are coming, and are awaiting you. Many visitors have had their trip spoiled by being deprived of their cash. They have been sold the Gap, the G.P.0., the Gardens, and Cenotaph, non-existent farms, sheep-runs, cattlestations, etc. They had an idea they were clever. Maybe they were, but the confidence men were cleverer.

"Confidence men use pretty girls, well-dressed and comely women of middle-age, apparently well-educated youths, and elderly men as decoys. Ii you listen to them, they will probably laugh last. No offence. But take heed! Do not flash your roll; others have done so and wished they hadn't. Do not carry too much money. Bank it," concludes the warning.
