MARKETS MAINLY FIRM

Both cattle and sheep were firmer at the Burnside stock sale yesterday, the former by about 10s a head and the latter by Is. Pigs sold firm at late rates. A total of 350 fat cattle was offered and the quality over the yarding was good, a greater proportion of prime sorts being forward than has been the case recently. Late quotations for beef were maintained at Westfield, though the yarding was below average. The offerings were of medium quality. Sheep were in steady demand at last week's rates. The yarding was small and of inferior quality. A small entry of lambs sold well at late quotations. The yarding of calves was the smallest duirng the season. The New Zealand Farmers' Co-opera-tive Distributing Co. offered a good yarding of sheep, principally twotooth wethers and store lambs, at the Masterton sale yesterday. A complete clearance was effected at the following prices:—Fat b.f. two-tooths, 20s 6d; two-tooth wethers, 19s to 20s 6d; b.f. lambs, 12s to 13s 9d; small, 7s 6d to 10s; w.f. ewe lambs, 16s 6d; small, 12s; w.f. wether lambs, 11s to 12s lOd; cull, 7s 6d to. 9s 6d. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency brought forward a small yarding of sheep and cattle. Bidding at auction was dragging, and several pens were passed. Following are the prices realised: —Fat wethers, 255; woolly wether lambs, 12s 2d to 14s; good ewes, r.w. S.D. rams, 12s 6d; small lambs, 7s 6d to 8s 3d; station cows, with calves at foot, £5 13s;" 18----month P.A. heifers, £3 10s. Wright, Stephenson offered a small yarding of sheep, cattle, and pigs. Although lambs were hard to dispose of at. late rates, a total clearance at the following prices was made:—S.M. ewes, to 17s; woolly wether lambs, 10s 6d to 13s Id; shorn, to 12s 6d; b.f. lambs, 10s 6d to 13s; small ewe lambs, to 13s; fat and forward ewes, to 15s; store ewes, to 10s; fat lambs, to 20s - ; forward cows, to £4; empty cows, £1 15s to £3; weaner pigs, 12s to 14s fid. LEVIN SALE. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., offered fair yardings of pigs and cattle at the Levin sale on Tuesday, but the entry of sheep was small, and the quality generally was poor. Porkers sold at late rates, and the offering of cattle was disposed of at prices showing an easing tendency. The sheep market ; was not strong, and realisations were distinctly lower than at previous sales. A line of fat lambs on behalf of A. B. Cottle brought 24s 3d, but they were of good quality. Fat wethers ■ were sought, the top price of 26s 3d < being realised on a pen of twelve, the . vender being Mr. ■H. Honore.
