HUTT VALLEY NEWS

VARIED ACTIVITIES

(From "The Post's" Representative.)

The virility of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's Garden Circle was evidenced when over sixty members attended the first meeting of the season in the small Horticultural Hall on Monday night. The circle, which meets every fortnight during the winter months, arranges a series of practical and interesting talks given by both professional and amateur gardeners, dealing with every phase of horticultral activity—preparation of the ground, pruning, grafting, spraying, and numerous other aspects, and also includes visits to some of the beautiful gardens of the district. At the first meeting the president, Mr. William Smith, was in the chair, with Miss Christine Fraser (secretary) assisting, and the speaker for the even-

ing, Miss E. Beagley, well known as a judge .at horticultural .shows, took as her subject, "Decorative Work With Flowers." Outlining the effects to be obtained by the arrangement of different flowers, she illustrated her talk with specimen bowls and vases and later commented on the good and bad points in posies brought by members. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to Miss Beagley. Waiwhetu Plunket Society. The annual meeting of the Waiwhetu Sub-Branch of the Plunket Society was held in Birch Street Hall on. In view of this continuous influx of the population the committee felt the urgent need for a Plunket Room in Waiwhetu, and the suggestion that this should be applied for was carried unanimously.
