ASCENT OF PEAKS

EASTER ATTEMPTS

TAPUAENUKU'S CHALLENGE

(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.")

BLENHEIM, This Day.

Peaks in the Upper Awatere region will receive the attention of a number of mountaineers during the Easter holidays and parties are coming to Blenheim from Christchurch and Wellington to undertake their ascent. As the highest mountain in New Zealand outside the Southern Alps, Tapuaenuku presents a challenge which is annually usually taken up by several expeditions, and on this occasion probably over a dozen climbers will have the 9460-foot peak as their ob-

jective.

. Six members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club will arrive on April 14 and, together with several members of the Marlborough Tramping Club, will set off into the Awatere district to undertake the ascent of Tapuaenuku, Mount Alarm, and, if time permits, possibly one or two other peaks in the vicinity. About five days will be spent in the area. Wellington mountaineers will be represented by a party of about the same number which will arrive on Thursday night's boat. They have adopted a similar programme and there is a possibility that the two expeditions will join up and tackle the climbs together.

Another party comprising H. K. Douglas (Christchurch), -president of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand, and A. E. Brockett (Blenheim) and his son will scale Mount Alarm, which is a sister peak of Tapuaenuku.
