IN TIME OF WAR

BRITISH COLD STORE SPACE

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

LONDON, March 17,

Official intimation has been given by the Board of Trade that an extensive survey is to be carried out by the Government into the available cold storage accommodation in the United Kingdom. The Government's attention had been drawn to the fact that while there is a vast system of public cold storage depots, -with a total capacity of 50,000,000 cubic feet, dotted all over the country, the unused storage space amounted to 20,000,000 cubic feet; sufficient to hold over 160,000 tons of refrigerated produce. As the Minister for the Co-ordination of . .ational Defence had given no intimation that the Government intended to use this space as part of the national food defence plans, questions were asked m the House of Commons and led to a statement by Captain Euan Wallace that a detailed survey of the situation was to be made. It had been contended that the cold store owners had responded to the nation's call by increasing their facilities during the last war, and that ever since the increased space had been unused, although the owners had received no financial or other assistance in connection with its upkeep The Minister of Agriculture has also announced that it is the Goyerment's intention to continue thenefforts to increase agricultural prosperity and efficiency, and the productivity of land and stock, by means which are "consistent with true economic interests." In the meantime, says Mr. Morrison, the range and variety of measures that have been taken in recent years to improve the position of agriculture constitute, "when viewed as a whole, a programme that can fairly be described as comprehensive.
